When I think of Cathy, I think of two words, kind and candy. Cathy has been committed to Norris for the better part of three decades welcoming everyone with warmth and kindness during her tenure here. She is known around these parts as the snack queen because she always keeps the candy dish stocked. Personally, I would like to thank Cathy for all she does for Norris. Take a second to read Cathy’s shout out and get to know her a little bit better!
How long have you worked at Norris and in what positions?
It will be 28 years this August. I started as a receptionist when the offices were still at the school. The administration building was built the year after I started. I have been a receptionist and a secretary, and am now the bookkeeper.
What is your favorite Norris memory?
In 1993 the International Youth Care Worker Convention was held in Milwaukee and a group of workers from around the world came to Norris to see what we did. I was privileged to lead a delegation from Russia around the campus.
What were you like in high school?
I was not at all like I am now in high school. I didn’t do very well in high school. Thankfully through my family and the Lord I was able to turn my life around after high school.
If you received enough money to never need to work again, what would you spend your time doing?
I’d love to travel with my husband, with my kids, with my grand kids – just travel! I have friends who are missionaries and they run an orphanage in Africa and I’d love to be able to go and help out with the babies. I’d also volunteer at the library to read to the kids. And spend as much time with my granddaughters as possible – they are growing up way too fast!
When was the last time you traveled somewhere new?
In 2018, my husband and I got to take a trip of a lifetime to Ireland for our 40th anniversary. Loved it and I’d love to go back.
How do you spend your free time?
For the past four years most of my free time has been spent doing homework. I am finally in my last semester and will be graduating, although sadly the commencement has been cancelled. With my new free time I have a ton of books to catch up on reading and with the nicer weather I can start working in the yard.
What is your most useless talent?
My mind is full of useless trivia…I’m great at trivial pursuit!
What would be your best advice for new staff at Norris?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you’re unsure about something. The people at Norris are always willing to help.
What are you most proud of personally and professionally?
Personally I’m most proud of my family, four kids and two grand kids. Professionally I’m most proud that I’m finally getting my degree.
