Estate Sale Intervention (Blog #8)

Author:  Julie H., Foster Mom

Do you know how sometimes the world just seems to dump everything on you at once? How bad things happen that don’t have anything to do with each other, but they “pile-up” to the point of breaking? Well, that was the weekend for Miss D.

This weekend we heard “so-and-so is an idiot”, “I don’t want to see them right now”, “this just hurts too much”, “I just want to control something in my life”, and “I don’t understand why”. When you have a foster kiddo going through so much emotional pain, you, as a foster parent, take on some of that pain and heartbreak. You can’t help but try and fix things…things that are impossible to fix. This weighs heavy on your heart as you wipe the tears and give a hug to your kiddo.

As Miss D pulled her boot straps up and showed her resilience Sunday morning, she wanted to spend time with some Waterford friends. I went to drop her off and on my way back home I saw an “Estate

Sale” sign. I’ve been passing these signs all summer and not stopping. Well, this day I actually did a U-turn and found the Estate Sale. Something told me to go…and I’m glad I did!

Here comes the “Estate Sale intervention” part! As I walked into the garage of this estate sale, I walked into a conversation between a man, his teenage son, and the owners of the house. The man was talking about how he adopted his son (the teenager there) through foster care. The son is 14 and has been adopted since he was 7. This dad went on to say (without knowing who I was or that I was a foster mom) that everything that he does and goes through with fostering and adopting his son is all worth it because the reward is way bigger than all the struggles. It’s like the universe intervened and told me exactly what I needed to hear at the exact time that I needed it.  This dad and I have now connected through Facebook and he’s offered unlimited support when I need it! 🙂 The universe (or God) gives you exactly what you need when you need it. I trust in that belief.
